Spin is the ability to tell the story your way, using adjectives and adverbs in new and novel ways to obscure the truth and here is a good example:
In a White House that had virtually forgotten what good news looks like, the past few weeks have been refreshing. A Republican won a much-watched special congressional election. President Bush recruited a Wall Street heavy hitter as Treasury secretary. U.S. forces killed the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq. And now the architect of the Bush presidency has avoided criminal charges.
The congressional race was a squeaker in a district that Bush carried with 62%, and it cost $10 million to win it. Bush, et. al., finally got someone from Wall Street to take the position of Treasury Secretary after a year’s search. The ‘leader of al-Qaeda’ was someone they could have killed in 2002, but didn’t so that they would have one more reason to invade Iraq. And Rove has avoided criminal charges for hte time being. The details about his situation has not been made clear. Was it a plea bargain in exchange for cooperation? The devil may be in the details, but in this case the details about the devil remain hidden.
