The democratic Internet

Posted on Saturday 24 June 2006

A good example of why net neutrality is imporant is covered, indirectly, by this article from the Washington Post.

For years, old recordings have piled up in the archives at Verve Records, including beloved jazz tracks that had no market big enough to justify pressing new discs. But thanks to the Internet, music lovers are rediscovering iconic titles like Ella Fitzgerald’s “Sunshine of Your Love” and Quincy Jones’s “Body Heat” — rekindling enough popular demand to prompt Verve to reissue them through a project called Verve Vault.

I love it.

When I was a jazz DJ on college radio back in the 80’s, I used to love going through the record library and finding gems.  I remember discovering some Eddie Harris that was mind blowing.  Most of that music is out of print.  I’m hoping that it becomes available because people are checking it out on the Internet and want more of it.
